During this unit I learned how to work with oil paint. I have done a bunch of pieces in paint before, but this was my first in oil. Working in this type of paint had both pros and cons. It takes about a week to dry, which made blending extremely easy, but made layering very difficult. I used a lot of blending in this whole piece, especially in the sand, to create a balanced landscape. I also worked with a palette knife when painting the water to create a more rippled effect.
I planned this piece by practicing the different sections of texture separately in my sketch book. I focused mainly on the figure because I knew this would be the most difficult. I used this technique when I started my final piece, working in sections by texture to complete it. If I could change anything, I would change the color of the blanket and try to differentiate the skin and sand more. Overall, for my first oil painting, I am happy with the result.
