For this project, the requirement was to find a trite symbol, such as the heart or the peace sign, and deconstruct it to discover the true meaning. We then had to create a piece that we felt represented these traits in a non-trite way. My trite symbol was the smily face, and I broke it down into the feeling of happiness. I chose to represent this as a lamppost standing alone in a very dull atmosphere with a single light. At first glance, this does not come off as a positive piece; however, if you think about how people portray their happiness in a world full of negativity, the piece begins to make more sense. As for the composition, I was originally planning on doing an all prisma piece. I changed this when I realized I wanted the piece to represent more of "the light at the end of the tunnel" aspect of the emotion and less "classic" happiness. I thought the rough pen sketch and the water color added to the darker side of this piece, while the bright prisma in the center along with the faded yellow watercolor brought a new subtle focus on the topic. Pictured to the left was my first attempt at this concentration. As you can see I used the wrong type of paper and did not add enough depth to the background. I also added the cobble stones to my final piece to add more detail to the simple concentration.
